They consist of foam filled sleeveless jackets that are designed to give protection to the torso of the rider in the event of either or both of a fall or a kick. Injuries cannot be prevented with a body protector but it may well make the difference between a sever injury and a minor injury! They have a separate front and back panel attached with velcro fittings over the shoulders and on each side to ensure a tight fit. Please note that a body protector must be adjusted to fit securely. It must be a snug fit around the body with no red velcro exposed on the fastenings. In addition, it should certainly not move whilst riding. Although a body protector may seem stiff and uncomfortable at first the foam does mould itself to your body shape becoming more comfortable with use. All body protectors must reach the current British safety standard which is BETA 2000. For general riding look for brown label body protectors. These give medium protection and are suitable for most low risk general riding (ie excluding roadwork or other hard surfaces, over jumps, riding young or excitable horses, etc). Purple label protectors give the most protection and are appropriate for normal horse riding, competitive horse riding and working with horses. Body protectors are measured across the chest, round the waist and over the shoulder, generally in centimetres. As with all safety equipment, we would always recommend purchasing a new body protector but used riding body protectors are available. Purchasing second hand safety equipment should, however, be avoided wherever possible!
